Frequently Asked Questions

What and Where Is the Heartland?

The heartland of the Unites States of America is the center of the nation. While the heart of the land lies between the continent’s two coasts, the idea of the heartland resides, as well, at the center of the nation’s soul. Hence, the heartland is not merely the geographic Midwest, stretching from Ohio through Nebraska and from Missouri through Minnesota. The heartland continues to hold within its embrace a unique American regional culture, typified by a remarkable decency, straightforwardness, openness, and steadfastness. Throughout its history, the Midwest has yielded some of the United States’ most transformative reforms, leaders, and innovations.

Where is Heartland Democracy Operating?

Heartland Democracy encourages interested neighbors across the Midwest to sign up with us for an ongoing exchange of ideas and strategies for winning over hearts and minds to the goals of just and sustainable communities. We have friends and allies in nearly all of the Midwestern states, and our numbers are growing each week.

Our initial outreach work in the Reforming Democracy Project is taking place in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin. [link to that project description here?] We encourage folks throughout the Midwest, however, to take advantage of our offerings, to bring our suggestions to your discussion groups, wherever and whatever they may be, and to keep in touch with us through this website.

As Heartland Democracy’s resources and partners grow, it will take its public engagement campaigns to surrounding states throughout the Midwest.
